This article discusses one of my favorite ad campaigns. It's something that specifically targets women, and conveys the message that we are a lot more beautiful then we think we are. We truly give ourselves less credit then we deserve. I think people in general are their own biggest critics. We see the worst in ourselves, and I think this ad teaches us to be a little less critical, and see in ourselves what others see in us. It's about being comfortable with who you are and giving yourself permission to be happy.
The only negative thing I get from this ad is some of the words the women use when describing their sketches side by side. One women associates looking fatter with being sadder and closed off, and then the thinner sketch of her she describes herself looking open, friendly and happy. You hear another women describe someone else as having a "nice little nose". Who says being skinny automatically means your more friendly? Or only little noses are nice? It shows how much outward appearance and societies values and ideas of what beauty really is truly has a heavily influence on our opinions on what makes people attractive, or this idea that their character is defined by their physical appearance.
It is sad that people associate bigger women with being unhappy and miserable and someone that is skinny is always happy and outgoing! Whats weird is I feel most of my friends who have a bigger build are probably the most outgoing people I have ever met as well as they have the best personalities! Nice job and this is an issue with women that keeps occuring.
ReplyDeleteGood post - beauty is a tough issue to cover, and yet, a very important one. I think you raise some valid and interesting points in your post. As I said, it's a relevant topic today as our society has become more enamored with looks or should I say the so-called right look. But as you state so well, who's to say what is considered beautiful and what isn't it. After all, as the adage says, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and more often than not, the beholder is the one looking in the mirror. Do you like what you see?

ReplyDeletehis ad by Dove is trying to unite woman and say all are beautiful, but once you really look at it with a critical eye, Dove is still adhering to our hegemonic society.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you took the time to not just support this ad blindly, but to also see it with a critical eye, I do think there could be much more to critically analysis about this ad though.
