Resume - Devon Hickey (Mondays Post)

When applying for Internships this past couple of weeks I've been sending out my Resume to many corporations and organizations. Now i'm sure many of you have done the same when applying for internships or jobs as well. Yet studies have shown people tend to make some common mistakes in their resumes that could cost them a chance to even be called back.

In the article "4 Things Recruiters are Tired of Seeing on Resumes," Catherine Conlan claims that being too wordy and not getting to the point can shy away recruiters, having gaps of no employment between jobs with no explanation can be seen as suspicious, having an objective statement is irrelevant, along with reference upon request. This is just an unnecessary line that tends to take up space on a resume. Making these little adjustments can strengthen and overall help you to find a job.

With people having a harder time getting jobs in our society today, it is very smart and relevant to take these tips into an account. Or if you have ever applied to a job and wondered why you never heard back, these things could very well be the reason. Though the y may seem small minuscule to you, to a person looking to hire, it could be a huge benefactor to why they never gave you a chance.

  1. Funny you post this. I applied for a job this fall and actually had an in with the Finanacial Advisor at Carthage and still never got an interview. I am starting to think I should of spent a little bit more time on my cover letter and resume! Good article!

  2. Good post. It's definitely helpful information for college students and for anyone in the job market these days. It's a change of pace from the more serious news posts that have been coming in. This shows the breadth of topics that one can write about in a blog. If you find yourself interested in career and workplace topics this might become a niche for you.

  3. I completely know what you are talking about! Revising just a few lines on a resume can make all the difference in the world. Employers are getting so many resumes for one position, it is pertinent that yours stands out!

  5. This is super helpful! It was a really great article. I am starting to apply to jobs and I updated my resume and ran into a huge issue of space. I ended up taking everything out besides work history, education and a small section on the rest of my skills. My biggest section was work history because like you said, everything else is kind of irrelevant. All employers really want these days is people with experience so it makes sense that people should just get to the point and show what they have already done. Great article!
