The Center for Disease Control announced the first diagnosis of Ebola in America on Sept. 30. The patient has been isolated at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital after showing symptoms of the Ebola virus. The CDC confirmed the virus being in Dallas,Tx on Sept. 29. The Ebola virus has created growing concern in America after two patients working closely with the virus were flown to America for treatment. A questionable decision on the part of our Government, since this disease has never been in the country before; Why take the chance? In recent, alarming interview, a top German virologist stated the virus could kill upwards of 5 million people in Ebola-stricken African countries.
As for containing the virus; CDC officials have a decision to make that could impact every citizen in the USA. A recent emergency measure has been passed giving the federal government authority to detain and quarantine anyone showing signs of carrying a communicable disease. However, the CDC and federal government also have the authority to deatain and quarantine "healthy" citizens. I whole heartedly agree the CDC should quarantine citizens who show any signs of the Ebola virus. On the contrary, I believe it is an egregious violation of our rights to detain any citizen who appears "healthy" or appears not to have any of the Ebola symptoms.

This is a very well written and a good choice of news to write on. It's scary to know that Ebola is now in America, but maybe we'll have the ability and medical facilities to stop this virus before it spreads too fast.

This is a huge problem and concern in the United States. I think the biggest conflict is whether people that contain the virus, should we keep them in the U.S. because we have the best technology and doctors to try and stop the virus or do we close all gates to people coming in from Africa to our country so this does not end up killing millions of Americans? I am torn on the situation. I feel at first they thought they had a grip on it and figured it out but it is a consant item on the news and we keep getting updated as another person contains the virus.....nice job.

ReplyDeleteErik,
DeleteGood post, well-written. You got in on this issue as it was developing and brought a focused analysis of the challenges the government and the CDC face in dealing with Ebola in America. As we know, the first Ebola victim identified in the U.S. and living in Texas, has died, sparking questions and widespread concern about the potential of this deadly virus to spread in the U.S. You got readers engaged with this issue as soon as it became of major concern here and you wrote a well-focused and detailed account of the health scare around the Ebola virus. You left readers with a good final point to ponder about how the government must balance its decision to quarantine anyone suspected of carrying a communicable disease against the rights of citizens.
